The 7 Series has stood at the apex of BMW’s vehicle line-up now for 40 years now, with each new version more and more entrenched to personify the intersection between luxury, quality, and innovation - heck, even good dose of sportiness. To commemorate this milestone, here’s another ‘Jahre’ (meaning ‘Years’ in German) edition, this time in honour of the first generation E23 7 Series that first debuted in 1977.
We say another because last year we saw the 30 year anniversary edition of the M3, and before that (albeit in 2014) was celebrated as the three-decade mark for the M5. With this car, though, the festivities do not surround the Munich marque’s performance cars but rather one that’s also very much catering to the high end in its own way.
Naturally, the 7 Series Edition 40 Jahre is based on the G11 generation car, either in standard or long wheelbase form. Mechanically it’s identical to the standard version but it’s the exclusive exterior and interior additions that set it apart. Each of the 200 limited units will be similar, however altered according to each customer’s own whims, with the entire swath of turbocharged straight-six, V8, or V12 power plants to choose from along with the a standard rear-wheel driveline or BMW’s xDrive system fitted.
The Edition 40 Jahre wishes to emphasise , in their own words, the “supreme presence, sporting elegance, and emotionally appealing aesthetics” that’s already present in the 7 Series. However, only two exclusive colours are given to the buyer, both from the BMW Individual catalogue, specifically Frozen Silver and Petrol Mica blue, which were selected because of the pleasing visual medley invoked when paired to the standard-fit M Aerodynamics Package.
In addition, BMW’s high-gloss Shadow Line exterior trim and set of 20-inch BMW Individual light alloy V spoke design wheels feature in this limited anniversary edition, as well as the series exclusive signet located on the B-pillar coverings and door sill.
Bimmer have been meticulous in the selection of interior materials with the 7 Series Edition 40 Jahre. Like most of the exterior, many of the added goodies come from the exhaustively long BMW Individual brochure. All the trim is done in fine grain Merino leather in either Smoke White and Cohiba or a Smoke White and Black combination with hand woven piping that integrates it with the Alcantara roof liner, also in Smoke White.
Standard for the Edition 40 Jahres are Comfort Seats from both front and rear passengers, while the rear occupants are treated to trim in either a Piano Black lacquer finish or a high-grade Eucalyptus wood with straight-grained Smoke Brown high gloss accents. Meanwhile, that same signet reappears engraved within instrument panel (toward the far passenger side) as well as on the two Smoke White comfort cushions, headrests, and floor mats.
