BMW Launches M4 DTM Champion Edition

BMW has announced that it will produce a special run of M4 Coupes called the DTM Champion Edition which features even more technology hewn from motorsport to result in a higher performance model to celebrate the success of Marco Wittmann’s win of another DTM driver’s title at the Hockenheimring.

The M4 DTM will have its 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged petrol engine generate 373kW and 600Nm of torque, resulting in a 305km/h limited top speed and a 3.8 second sprint from rest to 100km/h.

This comes from powertrain innovations gained from the racetrack to enhance the performance of the M4 GTS and is mostly attributed to the water injection system that allows the raising of the engine’s thermal tolerances by 16 percent - basically allowing BMW to safely push it harder.

Frank van Meel, President of BMW M GmbH commented: “Congratulations to Marco Wittmann, his team RMG and the entire crew from BMW Motorsport. We have the pleasure of honouring Marco’s performance by producing a BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition in 2016 to mark his winning the DTM driver’s title. Never before has one of our edition models been so closely linked to motor racing.”

The car will only be available to customer in this Alpine White colour we see here, with various aerodynamic components finished in exposed carbon fibre to lend it an impression distinctive of a race car produced by BMW Motorsport. These include the front splitter, the aero flicks positioned in front of the front wheel arches, exterior mirror caps, side skirt attachments, and a rear diffuser as well as the large rear wing firmly mounted on the boot lid.

Being based on the M4 GTS, the DTM Champion Edition is already a lightweight car. But BMW has gone further by replacing many more components with strong and weight-saving CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced polymer) such as the bonnet, roof, instrument panel supports, and rear diffuser. Like the GTS, the end silencer of its double-flow sports exhaust system are made of titanium.

The M4 DTM is currently on sale now in Europe and BMW Group Australia has reportedly pounced on the Munich-based automaker’s announcement for this limited edition high-performance M4, approaching all 25 customers of the M4 GTS’ that arrives on our shores. There’s is certainly demand for this ultimate M4, but time will tell whether BMW chooses to allocate a good number of these special editions for sale here.
