BMW’s all-new 2 Series Active Tourer (a rival for the Mercedes-Benz B-Class) goes on-sale in Europe on 27 September and breaks new ground for BMW as it’s front-wheel-drive.

The long wheelbase (2670mm) and high roofline continues the European trend for these sorts of practical hatchbacks.

Like the B-Class ‘Benz, occupants in the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer sit high, SUV-style. BMW has also ramped-up the practicality with a fold-flat front passenger seat and adjustable luggage compartment providing the capability for various loads.

It’s a genuine five-seater and sports the hallmark BMW front-end and kidney grille.

The engine lineup includes BMW’s first turbocharged three-cylinder engine (for the 218i) – a 1.5-litre gem with 100kW of power and fuel consumption as low as 4.9l/100kms.

More conventional is the 225i with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine good for 170kW and the 218d diesel with 110kW/330Nm.

As usual, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is available in Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport models – the latter boasting 17-inch or 18-inch M Sport alloy wheels and the usual M Sport interior and exterior enhancements.

BMW 2 Series M Sport models arrives a little later than the rest - and will be joined by all-wheel-drive models.

No word yet on Australian details.
