Audi has a shiny new racing concept car to show to the world, but it’ll do so only in the virtual space - at least for now. Called the Vision GT, it’s Ingolstadt’s interpretation of what might be a semi-realistic Le Mans racer for the next decade.
Vision GT is in reference to Vision Gran Turismo, meaning that it will be turned into a playable car in the new Gran Turismo Sport video game from Polyphony Digital. It might look like a squashed R8 with a big wing, but we doubt that Audi will limit themselves to a design we’ve already seen when presented with a virtual playground to do literally anything they’d like.
Other automakers have previously submitted their own ‘Visions’ to the game franchise, usually opting to furnish it with absolutely space-age shapes and aero, even powertrains. However, given that Audi is heavily invested in electrification, showing off its first full EV under their e-tron name, it’s quite likely this Vision GT’s motors will run silent (relatively).
We’ve no idea if this car, entirely virtual as it is, has any potential to transition into the real world. Judging from its side profile, it looks more or less like a conventional mid-engine supercar - unlike some of the more extreme creations designed and subsequently included into the game-scape by Polyphony Digital.
Audi has more or less confirmed that the current-generation R8 will not be followed up with a successor, possibly marking an end to the brand’s involvement in any purpose-built high performance machines outside of their dedicated efforts in motorsports. It also spells doom and gloom for the single-make R8 LMS Cup series.
Or, looking at this Vision GT and the car it could possibly maybe spawn, maybe not?
