Audi Celebrates Decade Of R8 V10 With The Decennium

It’s been more than years since Audi surprised the world with the first R8, a car that was absolutely stunning upon its premiere at the turn of the last decade and whose formula or basic design and identity have not changed in that period. And it’s been exactly 10 years since the company slotted a V10 engine to eventually supplant the RS4-derived naturally aspirated V8.

Ingolstadt is (rightly) choosing to celebrate the birth of their V10 their mid-engine supercar with a special version called the Decennium, Latin for ‘decade’. The bronze accented and dark matte Daytona Grey tribute model will be making its public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show next week and following that will be produced by Audi Sport’s Böllinger Höfe factory and limited to a run of just 222 units.

There are numerous detail touches that elevate the R8 V10 Decennium visual impact a little further, such as the gloss black finishes given the front spoiler, rear wing, side sills, and rear diffuser. Meanwhile the R8’s signature side blades and side mirrors are done in carbon fibre with a clear gloss finish.

Then, of course, there’s all the bits done up in bronze, the most obvious of which are the 20-inch wheels followed by the twin intake manifolds of the 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 producing 455kW and 580Nm. Just like the R8 V10 Performance on which it’s based, the Decennium has its engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission before being dispersed through the quattro all-wheel drive system.

Inside, the black leather and Alcantara trim finishes are peppered by the bronze stitching accents and a number of ‘Decennium’ plaques and Audi Sport insignias, apart from which there isn’t much to separate the cabin from its donor car.

No doubt the the reveal of the R8 V10 Decennium at the Geneva Motor Show will be tempered by some sadness that Audi will very likely be discontinuing production of the mid-engine supercar at the end of this generation’s model cycle, leaving the Lamborghini Huracan (and its successor) to be the final vestiges of this iconic Audi.
