Audi has launched the stunning soft-top version of its R8 sports car with local pricing starting at $376,100.

Powered by Audi’s glorious 386kW/530Nm V10 engine (featuring race-car dry sump lubrication), the open-top R8 accelerates from zero to 100km/h in just 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 313km/h.

Drive is to all four wheels via Audi’s rear-biased Quattro system and either a six-speed sequential manual transmission or R-tronic automatic.

The Audi R8 Spyder’s soft-top weight just 42 kgs and opens in just 19 seconds. Audi says keeping the weight down and the center of gravity low were two pre-requisites for the Spyder which tips the scales at just 1,720kgs.

Unlike the coupe version of the R8, the Spyder has unique air intakes behind the doors. The rear side panels and roof storage compartment are made from carbon fibre.

Two pre-tensioned plates provide rollover protection for the soft-top Audi R8.

Underneath are massive 19-inch alloy wheels and double triangular aluminium wishbone suspension on each corner. Lightweight carbon fiber-ceramic brake discs are optional.

Inside is the usual Audi R8 sports/luxury with a racy D-shaped leather-wrapped steering wheel, satellite navigation and Bang & Olufsen audio.

The luggage compartment offers 100 litres of capacity and for those who need to be in constant touch, an optional microphone system on the seatbelt enables mobile telephone communication even with the roof down.
