Only five examples of the glorious Audi R8 GT Spyder are destined for Australia next year.

Some 85 kgs lighter than the conventional R8 GT and boasting a top speed of 317 km/h, production of the soft-top variant is capped at just 333 units.

Power comes from Audi’s remarkable 5.2-litre V10 engine with race car-like dry sump and 412kW/540Nm. Driving through a six-speed R trnic transmission and Audi’ Quattro all-wheel-drive system, the V10 powerplant and miniscule 1,640kgs all-up weight sees the R8 GT Spyder scythe through zero to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds.

Amongst the weight-saving initiatives is a magnesium engine frame and carbon fibre for the roof cover and side panels. And inside, lightweight race seats have pared an additional 31.5 kgs.

The fabric roof includes an extendable glass rear window and – with electrohydraulic drive – can be operated in just 19 seconds at speeds up to 50km/h.

Inside, the Audi R8 GT Spyder runs and Bang & Olusen audio system, Alcantara or Nappa leather and the two-seater features three storage compartments in the rear. Up front, some 100-litres of cargo space is also provided.

Prices for the five Audi R8 GT Spyders earmarked for Australia will not be finalized until mid-2012.
