Audi will be producing a special run of R8s called the Audi Sport Edition to coincide with the beginning of their in-house go-fast department flying under the Audi Sport banner. Only 200 units will be produced. Hope you’re a fan of mixing and matching black and red.
For a long time the division within Audi tasked with motorsport and developing their high performance passenger cars was called quattro GmbH, so named for the start they got when they popularised all-wheel drive in cars when it was a preserve of the off-roader.
But now, as they have come to be known for so much more, the Ingolstadt automaker have seen fit to rename them as the more widely encompassing (but much more generic) Audi Sport. It’s a move that happened some months ago, and since then the motoring community have had time to adapt, though it still doesn’t roll off the tongue like ‘quattro’ did.
Back to the R8 Audi Sport Edition, available as the standard V10 or more powerful V10 Plus, which no matter which main exterior colour is chosen will be complemented by the silver, red, and black accents colours that make up the Audi Sport visual identity. Specifically, the side blades and side mirrors will be finished in red, while the front spoiler, diffuser, and grille and will be done in titanium black. Same goes for the 20-inch Y-spoke wheels.
Inside, there’s more red and black, starting with the side bolsters and seat backs on the pair of sport buckets. These are contrasted with gloss carbon inlays and contrast stitching on the trim. Other than those, it’s pretty much standard issue Audi R8.
Behind the passenger cell lives the same 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 in two states of tune. In V10 guise, it outputs 403kW and 540Nm, meanwhile the V10 Plus ups this to 455kW and 560Nm. Both are solely mated to Audi’s S Tronic dual-clutch transmission with 7 forward ratios, transmitting power to all four corners through the company’s quattro system.
Is this a proper tribute the newly rechristened Audi Sport, formerly quattro GmbH? Perhaps, if you’re a fan of exclusive colour schemes.
