Audi has entered the compact car market segment with its nice-looking A1.

Priced from $29,900, the Audi A1 sits between the similarly sized Volkswegen Polo and BMW 1-Series.

The Audi A1 is available in two model grades – entry-level ‘Attraction’ and range-topping ‘Ambition’.

Both are powered by Audi’s turbocharged 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine (90kw/200Nm) driving through wither a six-speed manual transmission or Audi’s high-tech seven-speed S tronic automatic. Audi claims the A1’s combined cycle fuel consumption of 5.3l/100kms makes it a class leader for petrol engines.

A 1.6-ltre turbo-diesel alternative will arrive mid next year.

Audi says the compact A1 is a city car with the expected Audi high performance driving dynamics. The German giant is looking to its compact newcomer to bring customers into dealerships who would not have previously been in the Audi league.

“This car brings all of the Audi principles of design, quality and engaging performance to a new segment of customers who don’t wish to compromise on a premium driving experience,” explained Audi Australia chief Uwe Hagen.

With modern looks (including an arched roof, sloping, coupe-like C-pillars and large wheel arches), the A1 looks sporty and has scored the maximum five star safety rating in EuroNCAP barrier testing.

Inside, the A1 delivers Audi’s hallmark quality and style but with a vibrant colour palette in keeping with the young audience who will comprise most A1 customers.
