Audi has handed-over 20 Audi A1 e-tron electric vehicles to the Munich Technical University for a real-world test.
Power company E.ON and utility provider Stadtwerke Munich are providing the re-charging infrastructure.
The Audi A1 e-tron is an extended range electric vehicle which uses a small internal combustion engine purely as a generator to re-charge the battery when needed.
Audi says the A1 e-tron delivers combined output of 81kW, has a range on pure electric power of 50kms and with the engine charging the battery on the go, a range of 250kms is possible. Theoretical fuel economy is 1.58l/100kms and exhaust C02 emissions are rated at just 45g/km.
Munich Technical University will gather data on the use of the vehicles and how electric vehicle technology might influence their choices. To assist participants, the University has developed a smart phone app so participants can log their use of the vehicles, relationship to public transport and any changes to their normal behavior resulting from using an electric vehicle.
