Oh for Heaven’s sake.
Legendary British performance marque Aston Martin have finally tired of referring to their upcoming mid-engined electrified-V6 hypercar by its AM-RB 003 codename it seems, as they’ve come out this week to announce to the world that it will arrive in the world as the Aston Martin Valhalla, a continuation of their Nordic mythological fantasy that began with the Valkyrie.
“Aston Martin model names always attract a lot of attention. They do so because they invariably capture an emotion or tell a story. Norse mythology contains such powerful language and rich storytelling it felt only right that the AM-RB 003 should follow the Valkyrie’s theme. For those fortunate enough to own one I’m sure they will recognise and appreciate the name’s connotations of glory and happiness, for there can be few more hallowed places than the driver’s seat of an Aston Martin Valhalla.” – Andy Palmer, President & Group CEO, Aston Martin Lagonda
Aside from the name… there’s little else we can tell you, really. Aston has confirmed that it’ll run a V6 hybrid powertrain, and that they’ll make just 500 of these all carbon-fibre machines, and that’s it. It’s important that following the Valkyrie, this will be the second mid-engined vehicle from the hallowed brand, which Aston Martin is confident will be able to redefine mid-engined driver-focused performance.
But on that name, we’re amazed that they’d call a hybrid-V6 the Valhalla. The name translates literally as the ‘Hall of the Fallen,’ which is a fancy way to refer to a crypt housing the souls of slain Asgardian warriors. To us, an Aston Martin Valhalla should offer the last and greatest iteration of a naturally-aspirated V12; by wedging an electrified-V6 in there, it might as well be called the ‘Hall of the Dead-on-Arrival.’
Whatever. We’re sure that the car will go to great lengths to either justify or nullify the Valhalla name. We just hope that they’ll stop playing Marvel superhero films in Gaydon & St. Athan, or do whatever they need to do to move past this obsession with Norse mythology.
