The most potent version yet of Mercedes-AMG’s flagship sports car, the GT R, will be making its Australian debut at the upcoming Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour Race in February before being available for sale locally in June.
There, the car (finished in its signature “Green Hell Mango” colour scheme) will be driven around the Mount Panorama circuit by five-time DTM champion and Bathurst 12 hour winner Bernd Schneider.
Last year, the Mercedes-AMG GT R broke cover as the peak of the range. A focused racer for road that immediately went after the fearsome Nurburgring Nordschleife track in Germany where it set a time of 7: 10.9 minutes.
A bunch of mechanical and aerodynamic improvements were applied to the car over its standard GT or GT S, including wider front and rear wings, automatically adjusting front air intakes, a large fixed rear spoiler, active rear-wheel steering, bespoke adjustable coil-over suspension, and a unique double diffuser at the rear.
It’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged M178 V8 sits up front but mounted lower back, technically with most of the weight in between the front and rear axles, producing 430kW and 700Nm to accompany a fairly thunderous soundtrack.
