Volkswagen’s all-new second-generation Tiguan compact SUV has only recently hit the Australian market. Before long, regional vehicle safety watchdog ANCAP got their paws on a unit and ran it through their gamut of tests, from which it emerged with a full 5-star rating.
It should be noted that ANCAP did not test the base model with front-wheel drive. This rating applies to all four-wheel drive variants.
Specifically, the all-new Tiguan took a 96 percent rating in the Adult Occupant Protection trials with a 7.53 (out of 8) in the Full Width Frontal Test and a 7.82 (out of 8) in the Frontal Offset Test. Other results of note is the AEB (City) test, where it scored 2.89 (out of 3).
Child Occupant Protection also yielded an impressive take for the all-new Tiguan at 84 percent but was less impressive in the Pedestrian Protection category with just 62 percent.
A lot of the Tiguan’s improved safety credentials can be attributed to the new Volkswagen MQB platform, its inclusion of dual frontal, side curtain and driver knee airbags as standard. So too are increasingly common active safety technology such as Autonomous Emergency Braking and lane support being standard.
“The new Tiguan provides high and low speed autonomous emergency braking technology (AEB) and an active lane support system that helps correct deviation if the car drifts out of lane. These technologies are standard across the Tiguan range,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Mr James Goodwin.
