Volkswagen has started the information trail on the all-new Passat lineup, issuing these design sketches and some details – including news of a hybrid powertrain.
That hybrid comprises a 117kW 1.4-litre TSI engine with a 82kW electric motor delivering a combined output of 157kW. Volkswagen says the hybrid Passat will be good for a pure electric range of around 50 kms and range between refills of 1,000kms.
The regular petrol engine lineup comprises the 1.4-litre TSI with either 93kW or 112kW, the 1.8-litre TSI with 134kW, or the 2.0-litre TSI with either 164kW or 209kW and a coming 3.0-litre V6.
Volkswagen says development of its 10-speed dual-clutch transmission is continuing and it will feature in the Passat lineup at some time, but launch will see a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG.
Big news on the diesel front is the range-topping twin-turbocharged 2.0 TDI good for 179kW. This is part of Volkswagen’s next-generation diesel lineup which includes the 1.4-litre TDI with 90kW and two versions of the 2.0 TDI (single turbocharger) offering 112kW and 143kW.
Volkswagen says the Passat will sit on its version of the much-trumpeted MQB chassis architecture (already seen here in the Golf and Audi A3.
Not much news on the styling front (well the sketches are just a sketches) but Volkswagen claims the all-new Passat will score LED headlights and tail-lights and dynamic turn signals (straight from Audi of course).
And inside, we’re told to expect full digital TFT instruments with advanced graphics (also straight from Audi) plus lots of new technology such updated self-parking, connectivity functionality and camera systems.
