Mercedes-Benz have released teaser video (more like a GIF in 4k) showing a wider preview of the all-new CLA Class lurking in the shadows. Though here, rather than focusing on the car’s tapering roofline, it gives us a solitary lit headlight.
To be sure, it’s the daytime running illuminator of the cluster that’s lit in this shot, which exactly matches the design in its hatchback sibling - surprising no one. It’s curious why we don’t see any indication that the other side was also lit, which would have helped the teaser score points for realism.
We’re honestly not expecting to be blown away by the all-new CLA mainly due to the fact that much of its technology and mechanical specifications have already preceded it via the W177 A-Class, not to mention most likely sharing its front-end design and interior as well.
Speaking of the cabin, the CLA should be as much of an improvement over the first-generation model in terms of materials and fit and finish where its predecessor was a little lacklustre in comparison to other Benz products.
However, the highlight of its reveal might perhaps be an updated version of the automaker’s new in-car digital interface. Called MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) and first introduced at last year’s CES in Las Vegas, the company has had a full year now to fully find its legs with the new system, the fruits of which could well be showcased in the CLA.
Still, besides a major surprise innovation or killer feature, it doesn’t make quite as much sense for the debut of a car like this to be at an electronics show. Sure, it’s arguably the largest and most high profile annual consolidated tech event in the world, but the Detroit Motor Show is scheduled to open its doors just a few days after CES 2019.
