Once-troubled Korean manufacturer SsangYong has launched the first model in its revival plan with the all-new Korando SUV joining the existing lineup of Actyon, Kyron and Rexton.
SsangYong has staved off bankruptcy in Korea and is now owned by Indian giant Mahindra and Mahindra.
Italian design studio Giugiaro continues its involvement with SsangYong in penning the compact Korando which features a stylish and contemporary look.
SsangYong Korando is available in three model grades – entry-level S is two-wheel-drive (six-speed manual or automatic), mid-grade SX is all-wheel-drive and also offered with manual or automatic transmission while the range-topping SPR is all-wheel-drive/automatic only.
Power comes from an all-new SsangYong-developed 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine with 129kW/360Nm and fuel consumption of 6.1l/100kms. Previously SsangYong enjoyed an engine supply arrangement with Mercedes-Benz.
SsangYong Korando rides on a monocoque chassis with McPherson strut front suspension and an independent multi-link rear.
Safety features are up-to-the-minute with active head restraints, six airbags, ESP, ABS anti-lock brakes and hill-start assist.
Inside is a choice of cloth or leather trim (the latter in black or tan), six-way electronic adjustment for the drivers’ seat and an impressive 486-litre luggage capacity. The rear seat split-folds 60:40 foe enhanced cargo versatility.
SsangYong Australia chief Jeff Barber hopes the launch of the Korando and the backing of India’s Mahindra and Mahindra will signal a turning point for the brand.
“With the strength and backing of Mahindra and Mahindra, and the prospect of a raft of new models, we are very enthusiastic about the marque,” Mr Barber said.
