Confirmed?
With the Alfa Romeo 4C considered to be one of the most involving mid-engine cars you can buy, especially for its price, perhaps it’s high time that the Italian marque move on to bigger and better - literally.
Seeming to agree, it’s been reported that they have green lit a project to create an all-new, purpose-built sports car, or at least according to a source tapped by Pogea Racing, a known tuner of Alfa Romeos. Logically, this new model is to be called the 6C, and is meant to be a machine that would be able to compete with the likes of the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911.
While there are close to zero details regarding how exactly it might turn out. Given Alfa’s current situation and the resources at their disposal, it’s worth making some educated guesses. First of all, the 6C is likely to use the same rear-wheel drive Giorgio platform as the Giulia and Stelvio as well as the 2.9-litre twin-turbo Ferrari co-developed V6 from said current model’s fire-breathing Quadrifoglio Verde variants.
A possible mid-engine layout, 373kW, along with looks and dynamics as befits a true Alfa Romeo makes for a most enticing proposition. We wouldn’t be surprised if Alfa takes some philosophical cues from the smaller 4C, making use of a carbon monocoque central structure as well as many other measure to keep weight as low as possible.
Another course Alfa could take is to merely leave much of the base intact, creating a new front-engine, rear-drive sports two-door car around what is essentially a Giulia coupe. Development costs could be cut considerably with this approach, and would be most consistent with the previous performance flagship to grace their stable, the 8C Competizione.
We’ll have to wait until further along the decision making cycle for an official announcement to be declared, most likely. That’s sure to take some time. However, the projected launch for this new Alfa performance flagship is earmarked for early 2020, leaving early 2019 as an opportune time to have it premiere as a concept car.
