Alfa Romeo’s 5 Series Rival, Alfetta, Could Be This Handsome

Italian automaker Alfa Romeo has recaptured the world’s attention with the Giulia, and could be looking at a larger saloon to cement its resurgence. It will have competition, though, especially with Volvo upping its game with the enticing new S90.

Like we said, Alfa Romeo had a strong start in its offensive strategy to take on the ‘establishment’ of premium automakers with its compact exec saloon, the Giulia. Even more praise was given to the 373kW Quadrifoglio Verde (QV) version.

But now that it has more or less successfully presented a worthy, if not exceptional, reason to not select either an Audi A4, a BMW 3 Series, or a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Alfa needs to aim higher. Specifically, there are two more core quadrants of the premium saloon that the Italian marque has yet to explore in this resurgence.

The previous 5 Series/A6 equivalent competitor that Alfa Romeo fielded was the 166, which did not sell terribly well during its production run between 1999 and 2007. It was a respected car, offering a level of stylish luxury its contemporaries couldn’t match, but flaws such as its relatively high price, reliability issues, and front-drive setup did not endear itself to many Alfa fans nor did it sway new buyers in droves either.

Alfa Romeo hasn’t said a word yet about this new mid-size luxury saloon, and are probably occupied with the release of its first ever SUV, the Stelvio. However, should this future model come to light soon, and in keeping with their move away from a numbered nomenclature, Alfa may choose to resurrect the ‘Alfetta' nameplate for it.

Here is what such a car might look like, and boy does it have all the right curves in the best places. Much like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and especially Audi, Alfa would likely style the next Alfetta to closely resemble a larger Giulia.

The very well done rendering comes MalteseDesign, published by Trazioneposteriore.net, and should it reach production, might end up borrowing a fair bit from the similarly sized Maserati Ghibli. If it looks as good as this rendering, the Alfa offering might be the more desirable choice - by far.
