“All variants will be stunning.”

Like a proud parent gushing over the success of their offspring, Mercedes-Benz isn’t holding back on the praise for its new A-Class, and the platform that underpins it. Speaking to Australian journalists in Amsterdam, brand design boss Gorden Wagener detailed plans that the German marque has for the new A-Class platform, which has left some of us guessing.

“I can assure you that all variants on this platform, there will be at least eight, will be stunning. The short front overhang, the low nose, the big wheel-size, the dash-to-axle ratio… the whole proportion allowed by the platform are crucial for good design.” — Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer, Daimler AG

Aside from the hatch and saloon, the A-Class platform is more than likely to underpin cars like the new GLA and GLB SUVs, the more practical B-Class hatch, and the new CLA four-door coupe. By Wagener’s count that leaves two more models that could utilise the A’s platform, and we’re at a loss to speculate what they might be.

It’s possible that the architecture beneath the A-Class could make way for battery-electric variants under Mercedes-Benz’s EQ sub-marque, or spawn other model-specific variations for the Chinese market in particular. Wagener didn’t allude to what Mercedes has in the pipeline, but shot down the ideas of a convertible, though a coupe could still be possible.
