Cupra, which is the performance sub-brand of Seat, which is owned by the mammoth Volkswagen Group, has introduced its first-ever bespoke model. The car in question is a performance SUV called the Formentor.

The Cupra Formentor – which was supposed to be introduced at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show – is constructed on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform and is closely related to the Tiguan SUV.

The Formentor stands some 4,450mm long, 1,839mm wide and 1,511mm tall. This new model is 87mm longer and 104mm lower than the Ateca, thus giving the Formentor a sportier stance.

The new Spanish sports SUV is a handsome thing no doubt. Both ends of the Formentor is a wash of sharp angles and flamboyant creases. Moreover, just like the Ateca, there are copper-coloured trim pieces all over. The rear end has a full-length light bar which shows off the SUV’s width along with quad-pipe exhausts, which is nice.

The sporty look is finished off by the addition of the copper-finished 19-inch alloy wheels, which houses the 18-inch cross-drilled Brembo rotors. The Cupra Formentor gets four soft metallic paint options along with three special paints as well as two matte options. The latter two are shown in the pictures.

The interior sports a pair of 12.0-inch screens for both the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. The latter includes the Full Link system which is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible. Of course, the sporty SUV will receive bucket seats upholstered with a choice of Petrol Blue and Black leather and a flat-bottomed steering wheel with paddle shifters as standard.

Powering the Formentor is choice of two powertrains. The first is a 2.0-litre TSI mill with 228kW and 400Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG box which then sends power to all four corners via its 4Drive all-wheel drive system.

Next up is the electrified option. Yes, this performance SUV gets the option of plug-in electrification. The system is comprised of a 1.4-litre TSI mill paired to an electric motor which gives it a total system output of 180kW and 400Nm of torque. The eHybrid Formentor has an all-electric range of 50km.

However, there is some bad news. The Cupra brand and indeed Seat will not reach Australia.
