But we’re not buying it, not one bit.

Nascent Spanish performance marque Cupra, recently-divorced from parent-brand Seat, is continuing its forward march as a standalone brand with this, the Formentor. It’s a concept car (they claim), and captivates customers and “meets all car lovers’ expectations of uniqueness, sophistication, and performance.” They say.

Not only does it have a stupid name, but we think that Cupra might be lying to us. They claim that this angular, aggressive thing is a concept car, but it looks far too thought-out to just be a concept. It has proper wing mirrors for starters, as well as a functional interior, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a 50km all-electric range. Concept cars are supposed to have lasers for headlights, a jet engine under the bonnet, and a zero-emissions range of 5-million.

There are bucket seats inside, a 10-inch infotainment screen with satellite navigation, and a digital cockpit which we’re going to guess measures 12.3-inches (they always do). But overall, it looks like the Cupra Foreman is very much based on the existing Cupra Ateca, albeit with a more aggressive design that the company says is more in keeping with their own values & priorities.

Just so that we’re all clear, the Cupra Fermenter is named after a Majorcan peninsula, and has no ambitions of starting a brewery.

While Cupra claims this is a concept car, we can’t help but feel that this is about 5-minutes away from production, should reception at the upcoming Geneva motor show prove positive enough. Should Cupra put it into motion, CarShowroom will happily lead the charge to lobby the Volkswagen Group to bring Cupra (if not Seat as well) back to the Australian market.
