Marking the fiftieth anniversary of the influential 1968 thriller film Bullitt, the Ford Motor Company has released a commemorative special edition of the Ford Mustang, which played a role so critical in the film that many would say the Mustang was as much a star as Steve McQueen. The dark-green hero car of the film has been faithfully recreated for this distinctly-2018 special, with the Mustang Bullitt expected to arrive in showrooms later this year.

A 5.0-litre GT V8 model is used as the donor car for the Bullitt edition, before getting the GT Premium and Performance Package bits tacked on. As such, there’s 355kW and 569Nm on tap being sent to the rear wheels, with a six-speed manual transmission in between, replete with a white cue-ball shift knob as a nod to the original car.

Standard for the Bullitt Mustang are things like the active valve performance exhaust system with black exhaust tips, which have been revised to let the car burble better. An open air induction system, a new intake manifold (derived from the Shelby GT350), and a new powertrain control module are all added too, to give this car the ability that its looks suggest. The result of all this is that the Mustang Bullitt hits a top speed of 262km/h, some twelve-odd kilometres an hour faster than the standard Mustang GT.

The cabin of the Bullitt Mustang features green stitching on the dash, door panels, centre console, and the seats, which match the green exterior hue (though you can also opt for a black exterior, if you’ve taken leave of your senses). There’s a 12-inch fully-digital instrument panel ahead of the driver (replete with unique Bullitt details), and a heated leather steering wheel too.

There are Recaro black seats inside too, with electric adjustment and memory functionality, an upgraded audio system, as well as rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. An adjustable semi-active MagneRide suspension system is also available, but as a cost option.

You can walk all the way round the car and you won’t find badges saying that this is a special edition. The only clear exterior definition you’ll find is the false fuel cap at the back of the car between the taillights, featuring the Bullitt logo.

Other exterior details include the Dark Highland Green as an homage to the original Bullitt Mustang (though there’s also Shadow Black available), chrome accents around the grille and windows, a unique black front grille, and red Brembo brake callipers hiding behind torque-thrust 19-inch alloys.
