And it doesn’t stop at Audi, either.
It seems that while Audi is enjoying strong sales of its funky compact crossover, the Q2, they’re intent on bringing a hotter, more adrenaline-pumping variant to market very soon, offering sports car performance with SUV style (albeit with mere hatchback practicality).
And though the SQ2 has been discussed quite a bit for quite a while, now we’re getting more concrete details on the upcoming model, thanks to a development car that was spotted as it went about its business. The car was unattended too, allowing spy photographers a very, very close look at the hot crossover, which is expected to hit markets next year.
The new SQ2 is, rather expectedly, set to wear a more aggressive design all-round. You’ll find sharper bumpers on either end, bigger wheels and air intakes, as well as four tailpipes out back. The usual smattering of silver accents are expected, on the door mirrors, the C-pillars, and on the bumpers.
The cabin is expected to wear a dual-tone upholstery scheme not unlike that of the standard car, albeit with a standard leather-wrapped steering wheel with red contrast stitching. The red will continue to the dash and door trims too, as well as the centre console.
Under the bonnet, expect to find a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-pot petrol mill, lifted from the smaller S3. In the latter car, the mill produces 228kW and 400Nm, enough to rocket the hatch from rest to 100km/h in just 4.6-seconds, before topping out at 250km/h. A sub 5-second time to 100km/h is then expected, which should be more than enough poke to get your hair on end.
Interestingly, Carscoops noted that the SQ2 development mule was “surrounded by Skoda prototypes,” which led them to believe that a hotter Skoda Karoq could also be in the wings, as the small Czech crossover shares its underpinnings with the Q2.
