Wow, another crossover.
Volkswagen has released more sketches and a teaser video for its impending compact crossover, the T-Roc. Built off the same platform as the compact Polo, the T-Roc will be taking aim at contenders in the lucrative compact crossover segment, looking at offerings like the Honda HR-V, Nissan Qashqai, and Citroên C4 Cactus.
The T-Roc is a car we’ve known about for a while, with its chunky styling and futuristic flourishes a regular feature in spy shots from around the web. While it’ll obviously be toned down from what we see in the sketches, it appears that some of the most notable look-at-me bits will be retained, likely to ensure no blowback for promising a lot with the concept and delivering little with the production car (we’re looking at you, Subaru).
It’s heartening to see in the video on Twitter that the T-Roc concept has survived somewhat intact, as the spy shots of the T-Roc currently circling round the web have shown disguised test units that looked mind-numbingly bland. Thankfully, it seems clear that the T-Roc will be sharing some of its design details with the Polo hatch it’s based on, which we’ve been able to see entirely uncovered.
Motivation for the new crossover will come from the engine families offered in both the Polo and the bigger Golf, with 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre oilers and a smattering of petrol options. All-wheel drive will be made available for the T-Roc on higher-end variants, along with the offering of six-speed manuals and seven-speed double-clutch automatics. A mild-hybrid powertrain from the Golf is also expected to feature in the range, along with a plug-in hybrid and an EV variant.
