There’s different options that will give any sports car that extra amount of spice, and with the 6th-generation Ford Mustang GT, that came in the form of the Performance Package that brought about some stiffer suspension, uprated brakes, and some minor changes that work collectively to make the car feel more alert on the road.
With the 2018 Mustang, facelifted as we know it to be, some eagle eyed individuals have spotted early signs that Ford is really not happy with how their car’s primary rival, the Chevrolet Camaro, has been getting on with its own variant interpretation: the SS 1LE. In response, there could be a further addition to the tiered Mustang offering going into next year in the form of a ‘Level 2’ Performance Pack.
Now, according to users on the active Mustang6G forums, these plans for a yet more focused version of the Mustang GT was on the cards since late 2016. However, newer material has surfaced that shows how significant these Level 2 changes will be. Spoiler: you’ll notice the wheels first.
Allegedly, gone are the street-adept wheel and tyre combo and replaced by a set semi-slick Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, the same rubber that comes standard on the Mustang GT350. They’re wrapped around lightweight aluminium wheels too, painted in a dark gunmetal shade, according to CJ Pony Parts.
There’s no mention yet of how much, if any, power Ford will allow us to extract should Mustang GT buyers pony up the extra cash for the Level 2 kit, though. The Coyote 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 will, however, get a power bump a standard over the 2017 car thanks a fairly extensive rework and results in 335kW or thereabouts.
As before Ford will offer both the GT and EcoBoost variants with a 6-speed manual but for 2018 will eschew the older 6-speed automatic alternative with a new 10-speed transmission that, ironically, is also used in the Chevy Camaro due to it being a co-development project between Ford and GM.
