2018 Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster, GT R Coupe Arrive

Mercedes-Benz Australia has released the prices and specifications of the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster, which the world was first treated to last September, as it finally arrives on local shores. These large, high-performance V8 bombshells will arrive in GT and GT C forms, promise to bring more burbling soundtracks to upmarket neighbourhoods nationwide, and can be had for $283,711 (before ORCs).

That’s what it’ll cost you to get behind the wheel of the GT, while the GT C will set you back an even dearer $388,711 (before ORCs). The difference between the two is what lies under the bonnet: While they both use a 4.0-litre biturbo V8, the GT packs 350kW/630Nm, while the GT C turns the wick up to the tune of 410kW/680Nm.

The main attraction with either of these cars is undoubtedly the open-air driving experience, which makes full use of the sonorous soundtrack provided by the biturbo V8 that lives north of the cabin. The roof of the Roadster comes in the form a ‘z-fold’ fabric hood that can operate at speeds of up to 50km/h, and goes up and down in just 11-seconds. Further protection from the elements comes in the form of a ‘draught-stop’ air dam that deflects air from entering the cabin, along with heated seats. A 10-speaker Burmester surround sound system ensures you can always hear your tunes at the best quality, supported by a COMAND Online infotainment system replete with an 8.3-inch colour display.

The GT C Roadster adds more kit to the already-plush GT, with things like AMG Performance seats finished in ultra-soft Nappa leather, an AMG steering wheel, ventilated seats, and AirScarf neck-level blowers (like an air-scarf, get it). Arriving in October, these two cars will join the existing AMG GT range, slotting in neatly beneath the flagship GT R Coupé.

Speaking of fixed roofs, Mercedes-Benz also detailed the limited-edition AMG GT C Edition 50 coupe, which will be arriving with the two topless siblings in October. The Edition 50 will set you back a princely $338,711 (before ORCs), only a smidge lower than the brutal GT R, but its limited status promises appeal. Edition 50 cars will come with things like unique detailing in the steering wheel and headrests, quilted Nappa leather, loads of black chrome everywhere, high-performance LED headlights, 19/20-inch staggered AMG alloy wheels, and a ‘Graphite Grey Magno’ or ‘Cashmere White Magno’ satin-look paint finish.

So which would you have, then? Any of these three newcomers, or would you go for the less aggressive SL instead?
