You read that right: A Wrangler Hybrid will join the new lineup.

The Jeep Wrangler, an American icon that has been with us in some form or another since 1941, is soon to come into its 4th generation in 2018, with model code ‘JL’ slated for debut. The new platform will bring about significant changes to the powertrain, which will also see a degree of electrification for the first time.

Jeep has yet to embrace any form of electrification, and understandably so: The Jeep name hinges heavily on the go-anywhere ability of its vehicles, and up until the Range Rover Hybrid, no other capable off-roader bundled electric propulsion of any sort. However, an AutoExpress report has detailed that Jeep boss Mike Manley confirmed the development of a hybrid model, designed to help the new Wrangler appeal to European markets.

Speaking at the Geneva motor show, Manley was asked if a hybrid would come about with the new generation. “Yes,” he said. “We have continued our studies on hybridisation for the Wrangler, and it’s a balance for us. Obviously, there are loads of different hybrid technologies, from mild to 48V though to full battery-electric.”

He went on to say that the Wrangler is about “balance,” and that they won’t pack something that “will leave you stranded on a hillside.” Manley continued, “For me, full battery EV is not a great fit. But hybridisation works well with the brand because of the attributes that come with electric motors – not just the torque, but also the control.” The Jeep boss went on to say that the new-generation Wrangler will undergo a weight-loss program, but will continue to use high-strength steel to ensure rigidity and toughness, the sort of thing you’d want in an off-roader.

The new Wrangler also puts strong emphasis in the sort of thing a 2017 consumer would prioritise from their SUV, like fuel-economy and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels. The Wrangler has also been previously confirmed to offer a ute body style with the new generation, though it’ll be packaged exclusively as a dual-cab.
