With the inclusion of Renault F1 tech, this Q60 is Infinit-ly hotter.
A performance-above-all-else coupe concept has been revealed by Infiniti, based on its Q60 coupe. Dubbed the ‘Black S,’ this concept car serves to mark the technical partnership between Infiniti and the Renault F1 team, and bundles in technology that the latter uses in its Formula 1 race cars.
The Q60 Black S previews a possible production car, though nothing has been confirmed. The Black S will utilise a petrol engine supplemented by a kinetic energy recovery (KERS) system, like the kind used in Formula 1. An Autocar report claims total power to be around 373kW, while a torque figure was not released. The engine under the bonnet will likely be a derivative of the range-topping Q60 Red Sport’s 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6, which produces 298kW/475Nm in current production form.
The increased power output is likely due in part to the KERS system, which captures energy from exhaust heat and kinetic energy from braking, and then re-deploys it via the electric motors for an added boost of power. In a Formula 1 car, usage of KERS technology makes for daring overtaking, though we don’t expect such a system to really be needed if you’re trying to pass a caravan…
The Q60 Black S concept was dreamt up to gauge market reaction to the idea of a performance-oriented Infiniti coupe, which could make a debut later in the current models’ life cycle. Aesthetically, the Black S gains a wild bodykit with more aggressive bumpers on either end, improved aerodynamics, a massive rear wing, and plenty of huge intakes to keep the uprated engine cool. We especially like the way the wheel arches have been extended very subtly, almost imperceptibly if you’re not looking for it. There are also two enormous exhaust pipes that you can’t miss, flanked by a race-inspired rear diffuser.
If you like the idea of an Infiniti performance coupe, let us know in the comments below. We certainly like the idea, though the drive-by-wire system that the marque is famous for may need to be absent to make this a proper contender. The Q60 Black S will make its real-world debut next week, where we expect to glean additional details on this striking concept car.
