Ford Unveils 2016 KA+ In Europe

In most markets, the smallest and most affordable Ford you can buy is the Fiesta, but Ford also sells their Ka city car in countries in Europe. Now the blue oval has brought out its successor, the KA+.

It’s not an entirely new design however, and is based on the Ford Figo that’s sold and built in India. But to make their KA+ a car that truly conforms to global standards, Ford has extensively reworked it for its introduction into the European market.

“Ford has a proud history of offering affordable small cars that are practical, economical and fun-to-drive,” said Jim Farley, executive vice president and president, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Ford Motor Company. “KA+ is true to that tradition, packing a huge amount into a compact car that delivers agile driving dynamics and a surprisingly roomy cabin at an affordable price.”

The KA+ comes standard with powered front windows and door mirrors, FM radio with Bluetooth, six airbags, ESC, Hill Start Assist, and remote central double locking with perimeter alarm. High spec models comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, DAB radio, Ford SYNC, leather steering wheel, and cruise control.

When it goes on sale there in June (UK prices start at $17,470), it will be available as a five door hatchback in two trim levels, the base Style and higher Zetec, both fitted a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that chucks out either 52kW or 63kW which are paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.

That engine is closely related to the 1.25-litre Duratec four-pot found in the Fiesta, and calibrated to deliver improved fuel economy and lower emissions. The Ka+ even has regenerative charging when the car is coasting or braking, to keep the car’s battery levels high.

The Ka+ has a wheelbase that measures 3229mm, which is 20mm shorter than the current Fiesta’s. But despite narrowing the gap in cabin space, Ford assures that the Ka+ is incredibly nimble, tuning its suspension at their Belgian proving ground to make sure it meets European standards.

There’s a small chance that Ford will offer the new Ka+ in Australia. The original Ka didn’t make much of a dent in the local market and the demand for smaller-than-small cars has been shrinking in the wake of more affordable larger models.
