The wait is over – Mazda’s all-new MX-5 has been revealed.

The fourth generation of the iconic two-seat sports car was unveiled at simultaneous events in Europe, Japan and California.

As you can see, compared to the previous generation, the all-new Mazda MX-5 has muscled-up - some would say ‘returned to its origins’ (the previous model thought to look too soft) – with an ‘MX-5’ version of lauded ‘KODO’ design language evident in the front grille.

We like the sharp headlights and triangular LEDs and there’s certainly some purposefulness around the front wheel arches which wasn’t there in the previous generation.

The rear too has a refreshingly  sporty look with a raised, flat bootlid and combination tail-lights with a thin out component blending with large rounded elements.

Incredibly, the dimensions are actually smaller than the current generation with the all-new Mazda MX-5 measuring 3915mm (105mm shorter), 1235mm tall (20mm lower) and the wheelbase is 15mm shorter at 2315mm. Width is the only one up – slightly – at 1730mm (1720mm for the current model).

Inside Mazda has ramped-up a premium look for the all-new MX-5 with a sophisticated dashboard/instrument panel and much better leather-trimmed seats – pleasingly the hallmark round air vents have continued albeit with a totally new design.

And Mazda claims pushing the MX-5’s cabin rearwards provides extra space for tall occupants.

Underneath the all-new MX-5 benefits from an all-new SkyActiv chassis with 50:50 weight distribution and the lowest engine mounting of any MX-5 generation to date has lowered the centre of gravity. Wheels are 16-inch alloys.

Driving dynamics and fuel-efficient also benefit from a trip to Jenny Craig (the newcomer claimed to up to 100kgs lighter than the outgoing version).

Speaking of driving dynamics Mazda MX-5 should be scintillating with that twin-turbocharged V6!

No, only joking! In fact, Mazda has not yet released any information on the MX-5’s powertrain except to say it will be a SkyActiv-G petrol engine.
