Well now there’s a modern version of TV’s “The Odd Couple” so Holden is back to the 1970’s too with the iconic ‘Sandman’ nameplate returning in a special edition Commodore Sportwagon and Ute.

Appropriately for a nameplate which was part of the Aussie surfing culture the Holden Sandman makes its public debut at Easter as part of the Bell Beach Ripcurl Pro surf event.

And to celebrate, on Saturday 4 April, Holden will host an interactive surf live site in Torquay, Victoria which will show classic surf movies (there will also be some beach-side games…oh and the Sandman will be on display).

The original Holden Sandman launched in 1974 as panel van and ute variants of the HQ Holden.

As well as shagpile rug carpets, the original Holden Sandman delivered 179kW of power and 427Nm of torque via a four-speed floor-shift transmission and drum brakes handled the stopping…sometimes.

The new, 2015 Holden Sandman is based on the SV6 and SSV Sportwagon and ute.

For just an extra $2,950 you get items like 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels, black fender vents, a black grille package, black roof racks (wagon), black sports bar (ute), Sandman decals (of course!), Sandman dashboard stitching, Sandman sunshades and Sandman floor mats.

All of that plus memories of endless summers and a time when life was a lot simpler.
