Mercedes-Benz technology covers all aspects of new cars and a highlight of the magnificent new SL roadster is Magic Vision Control – a new windscreen washer system which supplies washer fluid on demand via channels in the wiper blade which means the driver’s vision is not impeded while cleaning the ‘screen.
But of course the big news is the superb new looks of the latest Mercedes-Benz SL. The hallmark proportions are maintained however this SL looks even more purposeful with a bold, upright radiator grille and strong sculpturing on the sides.
At the front, the modern, slanting headlights run Benz’ Intelligent Light System with five different functions for various conditions. At the rear, the latest Mercedes-Benz SL gains some width for a more muscly appearance.
Size is up fractionally, the new Mercedes-Benz SL 50mm longer and 57mm wider than its predecessor. That means more room inside with shoulder room up by 37mm and elbow room increased by 28mm.
Extensive use of aluminium has delivered substantial weight reductions – the SL 350 is down by 140kgs and the SL 500 by 125kgs.
Inside, Mercedes-Benz ramps up the luxury with a choice of three types of wood trim and two aluminium finishes.
You can also choose from two different suspension set-ups. Standard is semi-active adjustable damping or you can opt for active suspension called ABD (Active Body Control).
Under the bonnet, both engines benefit from Mercedes-Benz’ ‘BlueDirect’ technology, including auto start/stop which means fuel consumption is down.
The 4.6-litre V8 SL 500 is good for 320kW (12 per cent more than the current model) and torque is up to 700Nm (32 per cent more). Despite this extra grunt, fuel consumption drops by an impressive 22 per cent.
For the SL 350’s 3.5-litre V6, you can chalk-up 225kW/370Nm and fuel consumption improved by a massive 30 per cent.
Look for the all-new Mercedes-Benz SL lineup to arrive Downunder next year.
