Safer, smarter, and sounds better too.
American carmaker Ford has released Down Under the updated version of its Mustang sports car, which brings with it a raft of changes to see it through into the 2019 model year. The Mustang is a very important car for Australia, sitting as the hottest-selling sports car in our market, and arguably one of the cheapest ways to get into a new V8.
But the topic of this article isn’t the V8, rather the versatile and more current EcoBoost 4-pot. The 2.3-litre has had a thorough looking-over prior to introduction, and thanks to a myriad of small changes it now produces 224kW and 441Nm (9kW down, but 9Nm up). Mated to it is an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission, sending power to the rear wheels.
Styling has been tweaked slightly to keep it in line with the very newest pony cars out, and feature a whole host of new kit. You get a 12.4-inch all-digital and fully-customisable instrument cluster, upgraded cabin materials (including something called ‘spun aluminium’ which sounds dizzying), full-LED headlights and reworked taillights, 19-inch alloys (with Brembo brakes hiding behind), a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen Play audio system, and four exhaust tips featuring a noise control system allowing you to customise the audible output of your Mustang.
Safety’s been given a fair boost here too with autonomous-emergency braking now featuring as standard, replete with pedestrian detection. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and lane-departure warning all join the kit list too, as does automatic high-beam, though the 8.0-inch SYNC3 infotainment system remains unchanged (though at least it’s a good system).
There’s a bevy of options available for the Mustang EcoBoost, largely similar to what’s offered with the V8 GT models. You can add premium paint for $550, stripes for $650, a spoiler for the Fastback for $750, Recaro leather seats (again for the Fastback) for $3000, 19-inch alloys for $500, or the previously-unavailable MagneRide adjustable and adaptive dampers for $2750.
