The allure of the compact segment proved too strong for Nissan – this time with a Micra that makes sense.
Nissan’s Micra compact car ticks all of the boxes essential for success in the compact car segment – including the one for value-for-money.
That was not the case over a decade ago when Nissan launched the earlier generation Micra, then sourced from its plant in Sunderland, England. Nothing wrong with the car, its specification or its build quality…it was just too expensive in a segment dominated by dollars.
The new Micra, priced from only $14,990, is well specified and looks cute, in a quirky kind of way. An exotic range of colours including Roma Red, Tokyo Silver and London Rose ensure Micra has a noticeable on-road presence.
Micra’s heart is a well-engineered 1.4-litre powerplant that delivers 72kW of power and 137Nm of torque. Drive is to the front wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission (no manual option).
As the Micra weighs only 965kgs, that driveline delivers zippy city performance that is pleasing for all kinds of drivers. Nissan claims fuel economy as low as 6.8l/100 kms and with a tank capacity of 41 litres, range between refills should impress.
Micra has a strong safety story featuring standard ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) and BA (brake assist). Driver and front passenger SRS airbags are standard.
A $1,700 option package adds dual side and curtain airbags for extra safety as well as 15-inch alloy wheels and an MP3 compatible 6-stacker CD sound system to supplement to standard sound system – AM/FM radio with single CD with MP3 input.
As most Micras operate in city/regional town/ suburban environments, Micra’s 8.8m turning circle and handy luggage capacity (251 litres with the rear seat up or 584 litres with the seat folded) score big points.
While the first Micra offered three and five-door models, the all-new lineup is limited to five-door hatch configuration. Like others in the compact class, Micra’s rear seat would not be popular with basketball players or sumo wrestlers, but most other adults will find it acceptable. Compact car shoppers should definitely check-out the Nissan Micra – you could say it’s worth a second look.
