The Volkswagen Group is one of the most prolific carmakers in the world, but if a report by German newspaper Handelsblatt is to be believed, the automotive juggernaut is about to embark on a dramatic overhaul of its production models.
This would result in more than 40 models spread across its many subsidiaries being cut from its future portfolio. Currently, the Volkswagen Group’s total production models amounts to roughly 340 models – and that of course includes those from the likes of Audi, Porsche, Skoda, and Seat.
A spokesperson for Volkswagen told the newspaper that the exact models that will be facing discontinuation has not been decided. That said, this is likely a move to not only cut total carbon emissions by its vehicles, but would also allow them to streamline their technologies for fuel economy and alternative propulsion.
More importantly, without the burden of having to adapt its production efforts into as many models, it could save a bundle which no doubt would contribute to recouping its losses following last year’s ‘dieselgate’ scandal.
Last week, Volkswagen said that it will be investing heavily in electric cars and autonomous driving, vying for the coveted market leading position in environmentally sustainable transportation by 2025. This leaning down, perhaps, is key to their post-oil ambitions.
