Volvo Car Australia is due to launch the marque’s mid-level SUV, the all-new XC60, in October - tantalisingly close. But before that happens, they’ve revealed some early specifications as well as pricing for new entrant, continuing where its predecessor left off as competition to other premium SUVs such as the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Audi Q5.

The range will kick off at a hair under $60k, or $59,990 to be precise (excluding on-road costs) the Momentum grade that will include the diesel-powered D4 that produces 140kW and as the T5 petrol with 187kW. Above that sits the more luxurious Inscription and finally the more aggressive R-Design.

In that range-topping guise, the diesel power comes from a gutsier D5 four-cylinder that, thanks to Volvo’s Power Pulse technology, delivers 173kW. Furthermore, petrol power also comes from four-cylinders, stepping to the T6’s twin-charged (super- and turbocharged) 253kW and 400Nm and finally T8 Twin Engine that augments with a plug-in hybrid drive system that exerts 300kW onto the road.

With both motors working at their respective maximums, 100km/h from a standstill arrives in just 5.3 seconds. Quite a potent little package then, not to mention practical and impressively efficient should you keep your right foot reigned in.

Naturally, Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system is present here, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility on top of one the best native in-car interfaces available today. Aside from that, each XC60 will come with their Clean Zone quad area climate control system that promises to prevent far more particulates and allergens from entering the cabin.

Also on offer is the City Safety collision prevention suite that now includes Steer Assist and Oncoming Lane Mitigation (operating within the 60-140km/h window)in addition to the active cruise control and autonomous emergency braking (AEB). Pilot Assist is also present, using the same array of sensors to deliver semi-autonomous driving assistance up to 130km/h.
