Perfect for urban and inter-urban duties.

Volvo might be on a roll with their passenger cars, slowly but surely gaining marketshare and winning over buyers that may have traditionally opted for some of its contemporaries in the luxury passenger vehicle space. However, its commercial vehicles division has hardly gone ignored and unloved, with Volvo Trucks today pulling the wraps off an all-new fully-electric hauler, that’ll work brilliantly in town.

“We’re immensely proud to present the first in a range of fully-electric Volvo trucks, ready for regular traffic. With this model, we are making it possible for cities that aim for sustainable urban development to benefit from the advantages of electrified truck transport.” — Claes Nilsson, President, Volvo Trucks

The hauler is called the FL Electric, and it’s being offered with battery packs ranging from 100kWh to 300kWh, with a range of up to 300km on a single charge for the flagship variant. Volvo says that while charge times vary, the biggest 300kWh model can be charged up in about two hours using a high-speed DC charger, though you’ll expect to be grounded for about 10-hours on a standard AC connection.

300km might not seem like alot, and it really isn’t, given the thousands of kilometres that conventional diesel haulers are capable of traversing between fillups. However, Volvo says that the FL Electric is optimised for urban and inter-urban use, such as for waste disposal companies, postage services, and so on. This would greatly reduce urban pollution, and the added benefit of silent running means that these trucks can also work through the night in heavily-populated regions too.

The first duties for the FL Electric truck will be with a recycling firm, and a heavy logistics company, both based in Volvo’s hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden.
