Volvo’s all-new XC90 SUV has been launched in Europe boasting a totally new look, new drivelines and a seven-seat interior.
The result of an investment of more than $7 billion, the XC90 ushers in a new era for the Swedish manufacturer as it debuts Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) which will underpin the next generation of vehicles.
“We are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand,” explained Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson. “The XC90 paves the way for a portfolio of exciting new cars to come in the following years.”
Headlining the new front-end look which we’ll see in future model’s is the XC90’s more prominent, new-look grille badge and the ‘Thor’s Hammer’ DRLs. Similarly at the rear, the ‘tatoo-like’ tail-light design is also earmarked for other models.
Most noticeable is the broad waistline which gives some real muscle to the XC90’s overall look and a larger bonnet to emphasize power. Extra muscle comes larger wheels – up to 22-inches.
The all-new Volvo XC90 will be powered by a range of 2.0-litre, four-cylinder ‘Drive-E’ engines highlighted by the range-topping 300kW supercharged and turbocharged hybrid engine.
As you’d expect from Volvo there’s some impressive safety features including two world-firsts – run-off road protection (tightens seat belts and triggers an energy-absorbing function in the seats and seat frames to lessen spinal injuries in harsh landings) and intersection auto brake (automatic braking if you accidentally turn in front of an oncoming car).
City Safety includes autobrake functions which can detect vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
Inside is some impressive new luxury and technology – the all-new Volvo XC90 is virtually button-free with a tablet-like touch screen control covering most function.
There’s a distinctly simple Scandinavian simplicity about the luxurious leather and wood interior including a gear lever made from crystal glass from Orrefors.
Audio is a 19-speaker, 1,400-Watt Bowers & Wilkins system.
In Europe, Volvo has launched the XC90 in two styling themes. ‘Urban Luxury’ includes a bodykit with polished stainless steel details, front and rear skid plates, side scuff plates and 21-inch polished wheels. ‘Rugged Luxury’ brings a tech matt black exterior, stainless steel skid plates, illuminated running boards and 22-inch wheels.
No word yet from Volvo Australia on local plans.
