Volkswagen’s ground-breaking Up! multi-purpose micro car is the 2012 World Car Of The Year.
The award, judged by a panel of 66 motoring journalists from around the world, was announced at the New York Auto Show.
“This award shows once again that in the Up! our designers and engineers have created a vehicle that has been thought through in minute detail. A vehicle that sets standards in its class for efficient use of space, safety, motoring fun and environmental compatibility,” enthused Volkswagen chairman Martin Winterkorn.
This year some 33 vehicles were in contention for the World Car Of The Year Award. Considering specialist vehicles like the Lamborghini Aventador and McLaren MP4-12C (and some which will never be sold in all markets) were in contention, the 66 journalists on the judging panel – especially those from far-flung destinations like Australia – must have had a hard job just driving all of the nominated vehicles.
