As cavernous as you need it to be.

Volkswagen’s released another instalment in its campaign teasing the upcoming T-Cross compact crossover, this time talking about the versatility of its cabin. Designed for both people and their things, the T-Cross aims to offer the sort of practicality you might expect from something a segment above. That’s never a bad thing.

While the T-Cross remains a highly-camouflaged model still in the development phase, the German carmaker’s not shy about showing off what the new model is capable of. The ‘I Am More’ tagline for the car hints to its segment-busting features. This instalment of teasers focuses around the sub-tagline ‘I Am Practical.’ Obviously.

The T-Cross’ MQB-A platform has played a critical role in the practicality equation here. The front and rear axles have been moved as far out to the corners as possible, increasing the wheelbase, and cabin room as a result. The rear bench is also a big player in allowing the T-Cross to offer space for passengers & their clutter: At its minimum, there’s a considerable 385L of boot space (but maximum rear legroom), while sliding the rear bench forwards permits up to 455L of cargo capacity. Fold the 60:40 split bench and you can access as much as 1,281L of room, enough for a myriad of things, while the front passengers’ seat can be folded down as well for even greater practicality.

At 4107mm long and 1588mm high, the T-Cross takes less room on the road but has a higher roofline than the larger T-Roc, which will contribute in no small part to a greater sense of airiness in the cabin. That should also be aided by cabin colour schemes too, with a variety of them expected to be offered, as well as a dual-tone arrangement.

The dual-tone theme extends to the exterior too, where one (just one) dual-tone exterior finish will be offered alongside some 12 other finishes. But the cabin can be spruced up with things like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, keyless entry, and 8-inch infotainment system, and Qi wireless phone charging. 18-inch wheels can be specified, though ride comfort might be affected, so we’d more readily recommend the full-LED headlights.

Motivation for the T-Cross will come from one of four engines: Either one of the three turbo-petrol TSI engines (rated for 70kW, 85kW, and 110kW), or the sole turbo-diesel TDI engine (good for 70kW). Power will go to the front wheels exclusively though. Safety will be well catered-for too, with AEB & lane-keep assist as standard while rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring will be reserved for posher models.

The Volkswagen T-Cross is expected to be unveiled in early 2019, with Australian market debut slated for later that year.
