Volkswagen Teases T-Cross Ahead Of Paris Reveal

Volkswagen’s all-new small crossover, the T-Cross, has seen no shortage of exposure since the German automaker revealed it’s entrant to compete in that highly lucrative (and fierce) market. Called the T-Cross and loosely related to other VW AG products like the Skoda Karoq and Seat Arona, it will have its shining moment at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.

First, however, Volkswagen wants to whet our appetite with some colourful sketches. Fret not, though, as these do provide some insight into what sort of designs the T-Cross will be exhibiting in spite of their slight disconnection from reality. First impressions are positive.

Following its debut in the French capital come October, the Wolfsburg marque plans to begin a Europe-wide rollout of the new crossover starting in Q2 of 2019. It clearly takes some visual inspiration from the Atlas SUV from the North American market, with its squared lines and wide grille that narrows toward the headlights.

Summarily, even the rear replicates this affinity for the right angle. Volkswagen admits that the T-Cross has been designed with a more masculine aesthetic, utilising sharp corners and a strong shoulder line. Should it hold up well in the real world, it would be a nice counterbalance to the curvier alternatives such as the Subaru XV and Mazda CX-5.

We do not know much about what will be powering the T-Cross, though we strongly suspect little deviation from VW’s current crop of downsized turbocharged petrol engines and dual-clutch automatic pairings. Though at least one variant should arrive with their 4Motion all-wheel drive system, most will likely remain front-driven.

Inside, the sole cabin sketch hints at quite an airy cabin with quite a modern and sophisticated layout. There’s a large touchscreen infotainment display, as is the norm these days, that folds into the recessed instrument cluster much like that on the new VW Polo. There will also be several interior inlays that will match (or contrast) the exterior colour.
