Volkswagen has confirmed a Geneva debut for the world’s most fuel-efficient vehicle – the XL1 which for over a decade has been the pet project of Chairman Dr Ferdinand Piech.
And the high-tech two-seat plug-in hybrid has been confirmed for production but unlike earlier concepts which had driver and passenger sitting in tandem, the production version has them alongside each the in the conventional way, albeit slightly offset.
Volkswagen says the XL1 is good for 0.9l/100kms fuel consumption and up to 50kms of pure electric driving.
While the looks are out of the box, aerodynamic efficiency was the name of the game and the Volkswagen XL1 delivers Cd 0.19 – exceptional.
Under the bonnet is a 35kW 1.0-litre two-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a 20kW electric motor which drive through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Volkswagen XL1 accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 12.7 seconds.
