Volkswagen’s Billion Dollar Bet On EV Batteries?

Volkswagen’s plan to launch an all-out group-wide vehicle electrification assault has brought along some previously unseen hurdles, even for a company as big and resource-rich as VW. One of them would be the sourcing and manufacturing of enough batteries.

To put that issue to rest and its battery supply under its own control and independent of firms such as Samsung, LG, and Panasonic, Volkswagen is reportedly poised to invest billions in a new battery manufacturing facility.

According to German newspaper Handselblatt, this move will be a key factor to rehabilitate Volkswagen’s image by taking as much of their petrol hybrid and fully electric offensive into a more vertically integrated supply chain.

This is line with Volkswagen’s plan to introduce as many as 20 electric vehicles by 2020, and just like Tesla with their Gigafactory to produce unprecedented amounts of lithium-ion cells in a concentrated location, this new Volkswagen facility should be responsible for similarly large scale production.
