Here at last is the all-new Volkswagen Polo GTI – the performance leader of the Polo family.
And it’s a cracker with power coming from Volkswagen’s turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine.
Drive is via six-speed manual with 141kW/320Nm or a seven-speed twin-clutch DSG automatic with 141kW/250Nm.
Unlike the previous generation GTI, the newcomer is only available as a five-door.
Underneath is sports suspension with retuned springs and dampers as well as a 15mm reduction in ride height.
Brakes are improved too with 310mm front discs and 240mm rears.
Styling sees the usual Volkswagen GTI look with red trim for the front grille, sports bodykit, twin exhaust tailpipes and unique bumpers plus handsome 17-inch alloy wheels.
Inside are revised instruments and a new 6.5-inch colour touchscreen and tartan-trimmed sports seats.
Two worthwhile option packs are the $1,700 ‘Driver Assistance Package’ (satellite navigation, rear-view camera and front parking sensors) and the $3,300 ‘Luxury Package’ (Alcantara/leather trim, heated front seats, sunroof and LED headlights).
