The 102kW turbocharged 1.4-litre engine debuts Volkswagen first cylinder de-activation which drops combined cycle fuel consumption to just 4.5l/100kms and exhaust C02 emissions to 105g/km. The powerplant is the first of Volkswagen’s new EA211 engine series.

Cylinder de-activation takes place between 1250rpm and 4000rpm and between 25Nm and 100Nm of torque. It’s unobtrusive – a display on the instrument penal alerts the driver they are running on two cylinders and on acceleration the switch back to four cylinders takes just 13 to 36 milliseconds.

Alluding to its GT badge, the new Volkswagen BlueGT runs sports suspension lowered by 15mm and gains front and rear spoilers plus 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside are unique sports seats and trim from the Polo GTI.

The Volkswagen Polo BlueGT goes on-sale in Europe mid-year but no Australian details have been released.
