The annual vehicle operating costs survey conducted by the nation’s automotive clubs (NRMA, RACQ, RACV, RACT, RAA) has named the Volkswagen Jetta 118TSI (manual) as Australia’s cheapest medium car under $50,000.
According to the study of more than 1500 cars, the Jetta will cost you $175.28 per week or 60.76 cents per kilometer.
The survey takes into account purchase price, depreciation, registration, insurance, fuel and scheduled servicing over the first five years of ownership.
With fuel consumption rated at 6.5l/100kms, the Volkswagen Jetta 118TSI had a weekly fuel cost of $34.28.
Even adding parking and tolls, the low operating costs of vehicles like the Volkswagen Jetta and the survey’s overall cheapest car, the Suzuki Alto, show many commuters would be financially better-off if they drove to work rather than using public transport.
