This I.D. car won’t be going into production, of course.
German juggernaut Volkswagen has been very proud and vocal about its range of upcoming electric cars, dubbed the ‘I.D.’ family of vehicles, with almost all of them either already earmarked for production or being seriously considered. However, Volkswagen has today teased a new I.D. vehicle, though we’re 100% certain this won’t be a series production car.
Dubbed the I.D. R, this is Volkswagen’s entrant into this years’ Pikes Peak hillclimb challenge, and marks the first time that Volkswagen’s R and Motorsports divisions are working so closely to develop a joint vehicle.
“Pikes Peak is, without question, the most iconic hillclimb in the world. For Volkswagen, it represents a fantastic opportunity to charge the topic of E mobility, both emotionally and from a sporting perspective. Competing in the most famous hillclimb in the world not only has symbolic meaning, but is also a valuable test for the general development of electric cars.” — Jürgen Stackmann, Management Boardmember, Volkswagen AG
A couple of illustrations of the hillclimb contender show off a car with serious aero, looking more like an endurance racer than your typical Pikes Peak challenger. Unfortunately, while VW waxed lyrical about the importance of the I.D. R and what it means to the future of motorsports, they were light on technical details of the new car.
