Don’t see why not. Not named after McCarthy.
At a mobility exhibition in Europe, Volkswagen has shown off a new concept car dubbed the ‘Gen.E.’ Despite its name, the handsome hatchback is not only designed to show off the company’s idea of future mobility concepts, but also serves to preview what we might expect from the eight-generation Volkswagen Golf, if suggestions are to be believed.
Gen.E claims to be solely an engineering study, its design and proportions nod rather knowingly toward the Golf. An eighth iteration of the famous nameplate is expected to surface in 2020, and the Gen.E does show off the new Volkswagen corporate design language rather well.
While Volkswagen says that the Gen.E is “being used purely to inform engineering developments,” insiders told Autocar that the concept provides “first clues” to what the Mk8 Golf will shape up to be. The Gen.E is incredibly aerodynamic, which allows the electric hatch to manage an all-electric range of 400km, besting the current e-Golf EV by a good 100km or so. A full-width grille features here, much like the kind found at the front of the new Passat and Arteon models, along with distinctive LED daytime running lights, an upright fascia, a heavily-raked windscreen, and an upright rear end that works with intricate C-pillars designed to assist with smooth airflow around the car.
The Gen.E is, according to reports, built on a brand-new lightweight platform structure that was designed on the outset to score favourably in crash safety tests, no MEB electrical architecture here. So maybe it's just a concept after all.
