Volkswagen’s ground-breaking Up three-door hatchback is a definite ‘goer’ for Australia and now some word the ‘Cross Up’ mini SUV model shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show is actually a preview of the upcoming five-door Up.
For Volkswagen Group Australia, addition of the five-door Up will provide significant artillery with which to attack the likes of Suzuki Alto and Holden Barina in our tough compact car segment.
Most obvious in the Up’s latest execution is the change to the shoulder line/side windows – rising upwards to the C-pillars in the three door, but flat in the five-door.
However the Cross Up displays its SUV theme with wheel arch and side sill extensions and a rugged-looking silver front bumper with integrated driving lights which is accompanied by a larger honeycomb grille. The rear bumper also gets the silver treatment – matched by the roof rails and exterior mirrors.
Underneath is sturdy under-body protection and 16-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the Cross Up runs contrasting red centre panels for the seats and – like the three-door – body colour door trims and dashboard fascia. Air nozzles are contrasting high-gloss black piano.
