Getting closer to production.
Despite Volkswagen boss Dr. Herbert Diess saying that the I.D Crozz concept first shown earlier this year being “a 100% certain prediction of what the future will look like,” it appears that the company has taken its futuristic electric crossover back to the drawing board for some minor tweaks and adjustments, with a more production-feasible model expected to make its public debut at next weeks’ Frankfurt motor show.
Building on the concept that we saw at the Shanghai motor show in April, the impending Crozz hasn’t really been detailed, and all we know is that it'll be “characterised by a clean, powerful design” and will feature an “open-space interior with four variable individual seats.” Fascinating.
No technical data has been given either, though the last time we saw it, the Crozz features two electric motors feeding 225kW to all four wheels, capable of spinning for up to 500km on a charge. Further, the “high-performance” battery is claimed to be able to recharge to 80% capacity in just 30mins via a fast-charger. And as with any future-car, the Crozz also comes packed with ‘I.D. Pilot’ autonomous driving capabilities, fed with data from four laser scanners mounted on the roof.
The Crozz will be going into production by 2020, preceded by the I.D. Hatch and followed by the I.D. Buzz, in line with Volkswagen’s goal to have 1-million of its own electric vehicles in service by 2025.
VW boss Dr. Diess is confident that the Crozz “will play a key role” in achieving that goal, though we reckon those hopes hinge a lot on what this upcoming ‘preview’ looks like.
